PH Electrode – Glass Electrode

A pH electrode has a very sensitive and porous glass electrode. Always be very careful when handling your pH electrode as it is very fragile. Always keep your electrode humid and never let it dry out, this will damage the electrode permanently.

pH electrodes work by producing an electrical potential between two liquids of different pH when they come into contact with opposite sides of a thin glass membrane, the sensitive glass electrode. This voltage potential is a function of the free acidity or free alkalinity of the solution. The pH glass electrode is permeable by H+ ions, and the pH electrode is filled with neutral with a neutral buffer solution, that holds an equal number of H+ and OH- ions. The pH probe is then immersed in an acidic liquid, the glass membrane is permeated by the H+ ions which exert a positive potential on the sensing electrode. This potential difference is measured by a pH meter and converted to a pH output. When probe is immersed in an alkaline environment, the H+ ions migrate outside of the probe, leaving an excess of OH- ions within the probe, and a negative potential is sensed by the pH meter.

PH measurement

Measuring the pH level is a very important step in water treatment. It is used for pools, spa’s, aquariums, laboratories, waste-water, fishing, food production… pH works on a scale from 1 to 14. A pH level of 1 acid, a pH level of 7 is neutral and a pH level of 14 is caustic.

It is so important because the pH level tells you if your liquid is Acidic, neutral or Caustic. Pool owners prefer to have a pH level of 7,2 because this is the same level as the tears of our eyes. But it is also a pH level that activates the chlorine. If you have an aquarium with expensive fish in it, you want to make sure that you add water to your aquarium or pond with the correct pH level. If you don’t take care of your pH, your fish will die rather quickly.

PH Electrode Calibration and Maintenance

PH electrodes require regular maintenance to clean and calibrate them. This maintenance will make sure that your pH electrode is measuring perfectly and prolong its lifespan. The time between the cleaning and calibration depends on how the electrode has been used and taken care of. The more frequent you use the electrode, the more often it requires cleaning ant calibrating. Overtime, electrical properties of the measuring and reference electrode change. For the calibration of the pH electrode you can use a pH Buffer with a fixed pH value. With these special pH buffers, you can recalibrate your pH electrode. A good and careful cleaning of the measuring sensor and reference junction will also help. However, just as batteries have a limited life, a pH electrode's lifetime is also finite. Even in the "friendliest" environments, pH electrodes have to be replaced eventually.

The following conditions are hazardous for glass electrodes: high temperatures, extreme pH levels or any kind of material coating on the surface of the sensitive glass electrode. Temperature changes in the measured liquid affect both the response of the measurement electrode to a given pH level.

You can clean your electrode by placing it in a special electrode cleaning solution. This liquid will remove the grease and dirt that has been collected on the electrode, once this is removed you can very gently use a soft toothbrush with toothpaste to clean the glass electrode.
