Salinity meter

Salinity meter pool, seawater, reef aquarium...

Salinity meter is a precision measuring instrument, designed to measure the salt content or salt level of your water, pool, aquarium, fish-farming, food... We have a digital salinity meter, designed for pools with salt-electrolysis and a salinity meter for seawater and reef aquariums. You can also use a salt refractometer.

How does a salinity meter work?

A digital salinity meter works by measuring the conductivity in the water. The metallic electrodes of your salinity meter will measure the level of electric conductivity. Salt works as a conductor when it is dissolved in water, the higher the level of salt present in the water, the higher the electric conductivity. The microprocessor will process this data and display the level of salt measured. Usually in grams of salt per liter, or percentage of salt per liter. Our salinity meters are very durable and accurate. They are equipped with the latest advancements in technology, if you take good care of these instruments they will last for years.

How to use a salinity meter?

Using a salinity meter is very simple, follow these steps for the most accurate results:
  1. We always recommend that you collect a sample of the water you want to test, in a clean glass or cup. Fill the glass so that the electrode of the salinity meter is submerged, but not more than that.
  2. Turn on your salinity meter and place it in the sample.
  3. Stir gently and wait for 1 minute, until the reading is completely stable.
  4. Now you can read the salt level on the display of your meter.

Salinity meter pool

Salinity meter is an indispensible tool for owners of a pool that uses salt-electrolysis to generate chlorine to disinfect the pool. Testing the salinity level of a pool is an important step to keep your water and disinfection in perfect condition. In order for your salt-electrolysis to work optimal, it requires a certain salt level in the pool. The required level of salt, depends on the instructions by the manufacture of your salt-chlorinator. The majority of salt-chlorinators require a level between 3gram-4gram of salt per liter. Lately we are seeing an increased popularity for low-salt salt-chlorinators. These low-salt electrolysis machines work anywhere from 0.5gram to 2.5 gram.

Not every salt-chlorinator has a build-in salinity meter. You will need to manually test the level of salt in your pool, to be sure you have enough salt in the water. You should always try to avoid adding too much salt to the water. Keep the salt level of your pool as low as possible. You can find the optimal salt level for your device in the instructions guide. Salt is very corrosive and a salt level that is too high can damage your pool and technical equipment. Use our Salinity meter for pools to precisely measure the salt level and adjust accordingly. Remember, the only way to lower the salt level of your pool is by backwashing and adding fresh water.

Measure the salt level of your pool at least 1 time per week. You should take a water sample as close to the injection nozzle as possible. Collect the sample in a clean glass to avoid contamination and place your salinity meter in the sample.

Salinity meter aquarium

For owners of a reef aquarium or seawater aquarium, salinity meter is required for constant salt level monitoring in your tank. Your fish and reef needs to have a certain salt level for the ecosystem to be as happy as possible. Luckily fish are in generally quite flexible and the salt level can vary without having any negative impact. Nevertheless, it is advised to monitor closely and adjust the salt level when necessary.
We have a salinity meter specifically designed for seawater applications. This digital salinity meter is designed to measure high salt content in water. Perfect for your reef aquarium, fish farm, pickling...

How to calibrate a salinity meter?

Calibrating your salinity meter is important to make sure you are measuring as accurately as possible. All our salinity meters can be calibrated. To calibrate them you will need a specific calibration solution for salinity meters or conductivity meters. Please check the manual of your meter for the correct buffer solution. Don't worry, calibrating your salinity meter is very simple. Before you start calibrating, make sure that your electrodes are clean so they do not contaminate the buffer solution. You can clean the electrodes by stirring them through clean, fresh water.

How to take care of your salinity meter?

Your salinity meter is a delicate precision instrument. Please take care of your meter. Always rinse of the meter after every use with clean water. You can dry the electrodes with soft absorbing tissue paper. After use always put the protective cap back over the electrodes and store the meter back in its case. The salinity meter should be kept in a dry place at room temperature.
